Rogers Cup—Toronto, Canada
World No. 10 Juan Monaco survived seven aces and hot conditions in Toronto, Canada on Tuesday, defeating Canadian Vasek Pospisil 7-5, 6-4 to reach the third-round.
Winning three titles on the year, Monaco used his first serve and back-court play to oust his No. 104 ranked opponent in one hour and 50 minutes.
Pospisil, who defeated Andreas Seppi in three tough sets on Monday evening, dropped serve on six occasions throughout the contest.
With the win, Monaco will next face Mardy Fish, who flew by Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-0 earlier in the day.
Fish, the defending finalist of the event, lost in the semifinals of Washington, D.C. last week.
Elsewhere, Mikhail Youzhny, Tommy Haas, Mikhail Kukushkin, Radek Stepanek, Sam Querrey, Fabio Fognini and Marcel Granollers all advanced to second-round action.
Wednesday’s action in Toronto will feature Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych.
